Avram Grant took charge at Chelsea today following the shock departure of head coach Jose Mourinho.

Some of the first-team squad, including striker Didier Drogba, were left in tears this morning as Mourinho spent three hours at the club's Cobham training ground saying his goodbyes.

In an emotion-charged atmosphere, the former coach and many of his team exchanged hugs as the Portuguese bid a final farewell.

There will immediately be doubts about the futures of Drogba and midfielder Frank Lampard, who have said in the past that staying at Chelsea depended on Mourinho's continued presence.

Former Israel coach Grant only joined the club as director of football from Portsmouth in the summer after a compromise peace deal was agreed between Mourinho, who opposed his appointment, and owner Roman Abramovich.

Grant has managed at club level with Maccabi Tel Aviv and Maccabi Haifa and will be helped by assistant Steve Clarke, their first game being at champions Manchester United on Sunday.

Chelsea were careful not to label the appointments as temporary but are expected to look for a bigger- name head coach to work alongside Grant.

Fans were hastily arranging a protest at Stamford Bridge tonight.
